Make Your Own Orange Liqueur At Home – Recipe

To make those perfect Margaritas you need very good quality Orange Liqueurs such as Cointreau. Unfortunately, a bottle of Cointreau costs around Rs.3000/- in India which is really atrocious. During our last outing with friends, we had some amazing stock of Tequila but no Cointreau ( and the outcome was cocktails with fruit juices alone that spoiled good grade Tequila)

That’s when I decided to make my own Orange liqueur at home. I found a lot of recipes for homemade orange liqueur or triple sec and after a couple of trials with them, this Indianised version was derived.

Orange Liqueur Recipe

Here’s how you make orange liqueur at home for less than Rs. 300/- for a bottle.

What you need?

  1. A glass jar with a tight lid (I got the one in picture for just Rs.70/- from SPAR)
  2. Two or three Navel Oranges
  3. Cloves – 2
  4. A quarter bottle of Vodka (Smirnoff) – 180ml
  5. A quarter bottle of Brandy (Mansion House works well) – 180ml
  6. Sugar – 1½ cups
  7. Water – 1¼ cup (300ml)

Preparation

Warning: The whole process takes very less effort but the wait is about 24 days. But I got to tell you that the stuff is worth the wait.

Day 1

navel oranges
Wash the oranges very well in lukewarm water (rub well while doing so) to de-wax them. If you are abroad you can use veggie wash. It is very important to wash oranges thoroughly since you are going to use the zest of oranges in this recipe. Wipe them thoroughly with a clean towel and let the remaining moisture dry off naturally for the next 20 or 30 minutes.

Orange zesting

Next, you have to remove the zest from the orange by using a vegetable peeler, zester or grater. I used a vegetable peeler though I had a zester. Basically, you need to take care of NOT including the white part of the peel which may make the liqueur very bitter at the end.

orange zest

Next throw the zest into the clean (and dry) glass jar and pour the vodka into it followed by the brandy. Close the jar tight and shake lightly so that the zest is all immersed well in the spirit.

(By the way, I used Romanov brand of cheap Vodka this time though Smirnoff is better. You don’t need to go for other expensive brands as the orange zest will anyhow change the spirit’s taste)

Orange zest in glass jar

For the next three weeks you have to store it in a dark place taking it every other day and gently shaking to help the orange zest flavor mix in the spirit well.

Brandy, Vodka, Orange Zest

After 3 weeks (22nd day)

Add a couple of cloves into the jar and keep it back in the dark place for another day.

cloves

23rd day

Filter the jar content well and pour it into an empty spirit bottle (e.g. An empty brandy or whiskey full bottle but NOT washed). The best way to filter is to first filter it via a clean and dry strainer and further via a coffee filter paper. If you don’t get (i.e. Indian context), you may even use a couple of tea bags (with tea emptied) and placed in the strainer to filter the content very well without any remains of zest whatsoever.

sugar

Next, we have to make sugar syrup. In a clean pan pour water and add the sugar. Bring it to a boil while stirring occasionally. Let it boil for about 3-4 minutes and then allow it to cool naturally.

make sugar syrup

Using a funnel add this syrup into the spirit bottle, close the bottle and shake well.

Sugar syrup and orange zest extract in spirit mixed

Your Orange Liqueur is almost ready. You have to let it rest for a day before you can use it. This liqueur has a shelf life of at least three to four months and you don’t need to refrigerate it (As per many recipe sites. By the way, I am yet to verify the shelf life)

Our orange liqueur

The color of the liqueur will be golden orange provided you use clear sugar (brands such as Parry’s).

Day 24

Let’s party! This liqueur prepared at home is extremely good to mix the classic 3-2-1 Margarita. The alcohol strength will be around 25% and 600 ml liqueur prepared using this recipe should be good enough for mixing around 20 Margaritas. Not bad huh? I in fact, mixed a good one tonight with a cheap brand Tequila, still it was heavenly.

Cheers! And let me know how your experiment went. In fact, it is very very easy to make this orange liqueur at home though my explanation probably made it sound like rocket science. By the way, there are other easier recipes as well.

Apartment Fire Fighting & Fire Drill – Video

We recently had a fire drill and fire fighting infrastructure demo in our apartment complex (Celestial Greens, Bangalore). Though this was not our first fire drill ever, this time around we got more community participation and interest from people as they become more and more aware of fire hazards – probably due to the Carlton tower fire memories and our own incident of a Mahindra Scorpio on fire in our basement parking area.

I thought of compiling a video (Yes, I am hooked on to video creation these days as I learn more about editing) of the fire drill. In order to set the context right and for the sake of completeness, I decided to merge all those clips that I had taken along with some graphics and clips that I got from the web. In addition, from the 10 odd fire drills and demos that I have gone through at various work places helped me to add additional fire safety information.

So here’s the video. Please go through it and let me know how you find it.

Apartment Fire Fighting

Though, the above video was specifically made for our apartment community, I believe that it may be useful for most apartment communities in India. Feel free to share this video on social media or by email if you found it good.

How To Remove Sun Film From Your Car Windows Yourself!

With the Supreme Court of India enforcing a ban on all types of sun control films on vehicles in India, car owners are queuing up in front of Auto accessory shops for sun film removal. Most of the service people charge something like Rs. 250/- to 500/- just to remove the sun film and the worst case is that you have to be in a long queue to get this simple service done. Another issue is that many of them don’t even have the patience to clean things up properly as the demand is high for their services.

Removing the sun film from your car windows is not as complicated as you think. Definitely, it cannot be as bad as installing sun films or tints. After some careful thinking I thought of doing it myself on my car and it turned to be an easier task which I did in under 15 minutes and saved me 500 bucks. And the best thing, of course, was the cleanest possible job because you are working on your own baby!

How to Remove Sun Film from Cars?

I took the help of my son Aditya and shot this video of how exactly you can remove car window tints or solar films? Well, I am talking about the ‘Indian’ way of doing it as there are simpler and neater ways (Steaming etc) of doing it if you happen to be abroad.

So here’s the video. Please go through it and let me know how your sun film removal experiment go.

Additional Tips

If you have installed some high end brands like 3M sun film, I must say that your life is a lot easier as hardly any glue stains remain after pulling out the film. If you use brands like Garware or even cheaper local brands, perhaps you may have a lot more to clean up of the residual glue stains.

Also, if you leave your car under hot sun for more than an hour, the sun film peeling process gets a lot easier.

Be very careful with the back light glass (i.e. the rear windshield) of your car. You don’t want to damage the defogger lines of your car by scraping them too hard.

In any case, all that you need to do sun control film removal are the following:

  1. Paint scraper (thin) – You will get it in paint shops and it costs Rs.5 per blade
  2. A spray bottle or old/used liquid soap dispenser
  3. 5 to 10 ml of regular liquid dish wash detergent
  4. A craft knife or razor blade

So how exactly do we do it? Please watch the video on my Youtube channel.

KFC Krushers based Cocktails

KFC India recently launched some refreshing and sparkling variants of KC Krushers (known as KFC Sparklers abroad) for the summer. I have been experimenting with KFC Krushers to make some cocktails and found two of their variants extremely good for making instant cocktails.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken Krushers variants that are good for making cocktails are:

  • Vanilla Blue
  • Virgin Mojito

Both of them are available at Rs.49/- in India which means that you have the possibility to make some refreshing cocktails under Rs. 100/-

So what are the cocktails that you can mix with these summer drinks?

Blue Lagoon

Well, the original Blue Lagoon contains Curacao but our instant KFC Blue Lagoon can live without that.

Method of Preparation: Mix 60 to 75 ml of Smirnoff or fine Vodka with KFC Vanilla Blue sparklers and there you go!

Mojito

This is no brainer! Add 60 ml of Bacardi or any good white Rum to KFC Virgin Mojito Krushers. Stir well and top with some crushed ice. Your KFC Mojito Cocktail is ready.

Since the Virgin Mojito from KFC already contains enough fresh mint leaves and lime wedges, you don’t need to add anything else.

How’s that?

Try them and let me know your feedback. And don’t hesitate to come up with your KFC Krushers cocktail variants and share as comments here.

Enjoy the summer!

Ultimate Summer Drink – Watermelon Chilli Punch!

Well, I have been experimenting with watermelon based drinks – both alcoholic and mocktails – since the summer began. Here is an absolutely refreshing watermelon drink for you!

I am not sure if anything like this exists, but I just called it Watermelon Chilli Punch!

watermelon chilli punch

Ingredients (To serve Two)

Watermelon – 1/2

Lime – 2

Salt – 1/8th Teaspoon

Sugar – 3 Tablespoons (or as necessary)

Green chilli – 1/8th of a long chilli (Max 1/2 inch long)

Ice cubes – Two cups

Drinking water – 1/2 cup

Method of Preparation

In a blender add salt, sugar, lime juice from the two limes and green chilli. Cut half of a watermelon into cubes and add the same to the blender. Add water and Ice cubes and blend well for 10 to 15 seconds.

Pour into your favorite cocktail glass (typically highball) and enjoy!

As we all know, watermelons are excellent for hydrating your body in summer. What you probably don’t know about watermelon is the secret in its seeds. Watermelon seeds contain zinc and selenium which is said to be good to fight even cancer. And the seeds have powerful anti-oxidants to maintain a healthy heart. With a lot of lime juice added, our drink is enriched with Vitamin C and other essentials. Then the sugar provides much needed glucose and salt essential minerals in summer! Finally, to make it real Indian stuff, we have the chilli punch added!

Experiment with it or its variations and let me know how did you find it.

And never throw away the seeds. Blend them with your juice and to make things better, pick those watermelons with not so blackish and hard seeds.

Enjoy the Indian summer!

Sachin Tendulkar Should Retire Now!

I need to start by highlighting this age old tradition of Indian culture – viz. Respect for elders. I must admit that I have been a firm believer of this particular aspect of our culture thanks to our education system and the Indian National Pledge that I took every morning in the school (“…I shall give my parents, teachers and all elders respect…”)

Sachin Tendulkar

As I grew and grew enough to become a middle-ager, I realized that people become more and more selfish as they get older – the primary motives behind the same being the greed for money and power. If you look around or read all those corruption topics that came up in the last five or ten years, you will realize that in most corruption cases or charges, there was a senior politician involved (or he/she was the driving force behind the same)

Well, every theory has exceptions and hence before proceeding further let me salute those exceptional elderly and senior fellow citizens who selflessly dedicated themselves to the nation, society and their family and the overall growth and reforms.

Our ‘respect elders’ syndrome can be observed in many real life situations in India. In most traditional families, the oldest person (doesn’t need to be an earning member) still have the final say on the family budget, spending or even what social stand to take on particular issues. He or she is more like the final authority on all family matters and the current Television Serials in Hindi seem to endorse this idea even stronger.

Jokes apart, what this culture has offered our elders is to help them hang around as long as they want to in their respective roles and careers instead of helping with a bit of succession management at the right time. Whatever may be the walk of life, Our seniors just don’t retire!

I have several examples from various fields and domains.

Our first World Cup winning captain and national hero Kapil Dev had to be literally kicked out of the Indian team after a disastrous and stretched final couple of years in his career.

Hiding behind heavy makeup and wigs, our senior actors at 50 or 60 years of age would not mind running around trees with teenage heroines unless they are forcefully and gradually taken out by the industry and fans. This is true in any Indian language movie industry and at times they even depend on the fan clubs and paid fans to hang around by creating fake publicity for the movies released.

Our politicians like Muthuvel Karunanidhi or Deve Gowda never give up a chance to contest the elections or lead their respective parties even though they are on adult diapers, wheelchair and completely mentally/physically unfit to be a public representative or parliamentarian.

Some of our famous playback singers have sung for 1950s films as well as 1990s all for young heroes and heroines. At some point they were kind of forced out giving no opportunities. Why did they have to wait till then and lose respect?

Most of the Indian sportsmen that I know, retired only after they were told to quit or ignored for a couple of years for major tournaments or national selection. This is true not only for cricket but with athletics, hockey, football, tennis, badminton or you name it.

Even worse, we are now hearing an age row from the Army chief of India who potentially wants to hang around for another year. Where are we heading?

Not ready to age gracefully?

The real problem that we are facing hear is that most of us are NOT willing to accept the fact that the age has caught up and you need to take wise decisions about how to utilize your current age, knowledge and acquired skills efficiently?

At certain age people from any walk of life need to think of the following topics:

  • Succession management: How to prepare the next set of people in the line so that they can take up the mantle at the right time without disruption
  • Opportunity for all: Just like I did get a chance at my right age, isn’t it important that the NextGen get a chance as well at their right ages?
  • Utilizing skills, learning differently: How can I retire now and still add value to the domain I am/was operating in? This could include grooming youngsters, joining advisory or planning committees, assuming honorary positions etc
  • Beyond money, power, ranks and visibility: This probably is the only reason why people hang around despite being not in their best times

Sachin Tendulkar Retirement

Now, coming back to the topic of Sachin’s retirement.

In my opinion, Sachin Tendulkar has nothing more to prove (like the latest stupid number from Dhanush suggests) in his field. He has created many individual records, made hell lot of money and fans and more importantly played for the country for around a quarter of a century. He has to accept the fact that he’s 39 now and he got the rare chance to play for India at the age of 16. It’s time for him to do something else in life beyond piling up more personal records, degrade himself and go out. At the moment, it’s clear that he’s slowly degrading and even if he’s not, it’s high time he retired and passed the baton to youngsters. Moreover, with the likes of Ricky Ponting retiring from ODIs, there will not be anyone else who could potentially break his personal records unless the rules of the game and format change drastically. By the way, this is NOT just about Sachin Tendulkar but holds good for most other oldies too – be it Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman – and not so old underperformers like Sehwag.

I had actually mentioned about the need for succession plan in Indian cricket three years ago. If they had done it in steps, the current situation of youngsters not performing would not have happened.

And a final comment on retiring at the right time. Choosing to retire at the right time is all the more important if you are representing the country, a community, geographic region or a team. i.e. People like golfers or tennis players (sometimes actors and singers too) who represent themselves in individual performances may opt for late retirements. But that should not be the case with politicians, sportsmen, and bureaucrats who represent the country. And anybody’s legendary status does not automatically provide extra time for them to decide to go out on their terms! They have to think about the team and country ahead of their individual aspirations.

So Sachin, will you be a gentleman and retire on your own at the peak or would you want to stretch it beyond 40 years of age, belittle yourself and get sidelined forcibly? Decide yourself! Ideally, you should have quit after taking the victory lap in ICC Cricket World Cup finals last year!
